On the day of Luz's belated quinceañera, Hunter meets up with Willow and together they fly to gather the rest of their friends. They stop at the new Latissa Hospital, and after meeting with Darius, go to the location of Luz's quinceañera.

Luz comes up with a plan to get the palismen away from Kikimora while en-route to the Emperor's Castle. Using a fire and ice glyph combination, she can conjure up a thick mist, combined with pollen from sleeping nettle flowers that will create a sleeping-induced smoke, forcing Kikimora and her dragon to land. The Golden Guard is impressed by Luz's knowledge and compares Luz's glyph magic to the elemental magic once used during the Savage Ages.
This leads Amity to realize that Luz never meant any harm and that she never took the time to get to know her. While she was seemingly excited to join the Emperor's Coven, Odalia had groomed her to join. In "Hollow Mind", Hunter is transported into Belos' mindscape along with Luz, resulting in him seeing his supposed uncle's true colors first-hand. However, he ends up possessed by Belos' remains, attacking the others and nearly dying before Flapjack saves him by sacrificing himself.[53] Upon returning to the Boiling Isles, he becomes defensive and struggles with his grief over his palisman, but manages to help Willow, whom he is implied to have a mutual crush on, with her insecurities. Additionally, he discovers that he possesses some of Flapjack's magic, giving him the ability to teleport.[17] In the epilogue, Hunter is seen working as a palisman carver.

They then spent months together in the human realm, Hunter participating in giving the Nocedas a type of food made from ingredients in the Boiling Isles. When facing Belos during the Day of Unity, Belos tries to manipulate Hunter to stop fighting to no avail.

However, when Hunter convinces Amity to untie him due to Kikimora having found them, he turns on Amity, kicking her legs out from under her and leaving her to be captured by the Emperor's Coven while he runs off to get the Titan's Blood before anyone else can. Amity later finds Hunter in the middle of the dried up Eclipse Lake, visibly exhausted from having fought his way through Kikimora and her guards and having a breakdown due to having found no Titan's Blood for Belos. Hunter begins digging a hole which he refers to as his "grave" before lying down in it. Amity attempts to console the distraught Golden Guard, telling him that he too can find people that care about him for who he is, rather than what they want from him, like she did. In spite of these lingering emotional insecurities, Hunter's personality tremendously improved during his and his friends' time stranded in the Human Realm, becoming much more cheerful, enthusiastic and somewhat geeky, as he came to enjoy his newfound freedom from Belos' control. Additionally, Hunter also possessed a deep fascination and fondness for many customs and features of the Human Realm, including sewing, wolves and especially the Cosmic Frontier science-fiction series, of which he became a fan of.

Over the course of the remaining Summer, Hunter contemplates how his friends will feel when they find out the truth and hallucinates becoming Belos after his hair grows out, resulting in him cutting off most of it in a panic before Willow finishes it properly, until it resembles Luz's former hairstyle, leading him to gain some confidence. In the Fall, while his friends become despondent and homesick, Hunter becomes generally happier about his new life, but he's concerned about Flapjack constantly pecking at the floorboards until Amity finds a box containing a map where he was pecking, and they all agree to go out and figure out what it means without Luz to surprise her.
Soon, King and the Collector arrive and stop Eda, soon revealed to be Terra Snapdragon dressed as Eda. He and the others watch in horror as Terra is turned into a puppet after angering the Collector. King and the Collector gather up the puppets before heading back to their house. Luz decides to go after them and the group is soon found by Skara, Barcus, and Matt Tholomule.
When Hunter showed a willingness to rebel, Darius gave him a scroll and helped him set up a Penstagram account, in addition to keeping Flapjack, his palisman, a secret from Belos. Months later, when Hunter returns to the Demon Realm, Darius welcomes him with head pats, and appears to look after him in the epilogue. Luz finds him and starts to fight when Amity, Gus, and Willow, along with Camila and Vee, arrive. Flapjack tries to get Hunter back in control, but becomes annoyed, Belos crushes him instead. However, Belos hurting Flapjack causes him to regain control and he tosses the blood into a lake.
